Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Kalida, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Kalida that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
