Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Lagrange, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Lagrange which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
