Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Lakeside Marblehead, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Lakeside Marblehead that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
