Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Lima, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Lima which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
