Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Logan, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Logan that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
