Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Medway, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Medway which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
