Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Milford Center, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Milford Center which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
