Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Mogadore, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Mogadore that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
