Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - New Madison, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in New Madison which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
