Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - New Philadelphia, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in New Philadelphia which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
