Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - New Rumley, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in New Rumley which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
