Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - North Jackson, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in North Jackson that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
