Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Northfield, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Northfield that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
