The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but inpatient services for detox are limited to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military insurance carriers are allowed to stay in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly accepted. Additionally, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished prior treatment services such as inpatient or outpatient treatment.
