Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Osgood, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Osgood which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
