Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Stockport, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Stockport that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
