Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Sylvania, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Sylvania that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
