Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Trotwood, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Trotwood which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
