Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Vickery, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Vickery which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
