Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Vienna, OH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Vienna that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
