Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Winchester, OH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Winchester which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
