Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Asher, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Asher that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
