Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Cement, OK.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Cement which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
