Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Coweta, OK.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Coweta that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
