American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Edmond face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who live in rural areas. Facilities offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural regions may not be capable of offering support intended for the needs of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which treatment services are available to them through which rehab facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants offered in recent years to cover these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
