Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Gage, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Gage which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
