Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Gate, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Gate that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
