American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Gore face is access to effective treatment facilities, especially those who live in rural areas. Programs providing addiction rehab services in rural regions commonly are not capable of offering support intended for the needs of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to determine which treatment services are an option for them through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants approved in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
