Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Kemp, OK.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Kemp that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
