Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Marlow, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Marlow that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
