Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Mulhall, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Mulhall which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
