Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Owasso, OK.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Owasso which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
