Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Paden, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Paden which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
