American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
