Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Seminole, OK.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Seminole which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
