Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Stroud, OK.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Stroud which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
