Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Temple, OK.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Temple which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
