Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Tuskahoma, OK.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Tuskahoma that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
