American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Deadwood face is access to comprehensive services, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Facilities providing substance abuse rehab services in rural areas may not be capable of offering strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this special group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which treatment services are available to them and through which rehab facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective programs which offer evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
