American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Gates face is access to comprehensive services, especially those who reside in secluded locations. Facilities offering drug and alcohol treatment services in rural regions may not be able to offer support designed to meet the needs and demands of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their native language.
