American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Grants Pass face is access to effective services, particularly those who reside in secluded regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be set up to provide support designed to meet the needs and demands of this special demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which services are an option for them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
