American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a diversion option to receive treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
