The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can select a primary doctor and obtain referrals to organizations that offer specialty care.
Through TRICARE, military members can receive drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in The Dalles. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other rehab services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there will most likely be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detoxification are restricted to no more than 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detoxification will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly permitted. Additionally, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which are done on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other treatment services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
