Treatment clients referred from the court for drug treatment are usually referred because they are being granted a chance to accept rehab instead of jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is most common with first time offenders, it can occur at any point such as while the defendant is already incarcerated. There are different types of rehab programs that offenders can be referred to, and it usually all depends on which programs are local to Unity and the type of issues the person requires treatment for.
There are treatment programs that work exclusively with the courts to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are usually state or federally funded or are offered at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private substance abuse treatment programs that may be accepted by the court if there is a specific type of recovery method that the person needs or wants that a different facility can't provide. The defendant's attorney can request such options to the judge for approval. There are even drug and alcohol treatment facilities that provide services from the jails themselves, where clients are sometimes in a better position for reduced sentences or other leniencies when engaging in drug treatment services while serving their sentence for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
