American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Vida face is access to effective rehab programs, especially those who reside in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehab services in rural areas may not be set up to provide support designed to meet the needs of this distinctive demographic including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to determine which treatment services are available to them through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
