One of the outpatient treatment alternatives for clients in East Berlin who are struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed facilities and doctors are certified to give specific medications to opioid addicted people, many of which are opioids also and are addiction. With low doses the client does not experience being high but also does not have acute cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med tried for this purpose, but there are a few more options currently to choose from.
Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an outpatient clinic certified to administer the drug, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the med is around $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone that is only be dispensed in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about $300 /month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a drug which blocks the effects of opiates. An individual taking this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and is priced about $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional med taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it is an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents an individual from experience being high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
