Outpatient Methadone Buprenorphine or Vivitrol - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Portland, PA.

One of the outpatient treatment alternatives for clients in Portland struggling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are authorized to administer specific medications to opioid addicted people, many that are opioid-based themselves and are addictive. With low doses however, the individual does not feel high and also does not experience severe cravings and is not experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug tried for this sole purpose, but there are alternative choices to select from.

Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the drug, that is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is about $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opioid-based drug, and is in pill form often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone that is only be administered in highly structured clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is around $300 /month for the generic of the med. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a med which reverses the effects of opiates. An individual consuming this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is another med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents an individual from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
