One of the outpatient rehabilitation alternatives for clients in West Lebanon who are struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Some centers and doctors are certified to administer specific medications to opioid dependent clients, many of which are opioids themselves and are addictive. With low doses however, the client does not experience high feelings and also does not experience acute cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug tried for this purpose, but there are alternative options to choose from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an outpatient clinic certified to administer the drug, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the med is around $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based med, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone which can only be dispensed in highly well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is about $300 a month for the generic of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids. Someone consuming this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 per month. Naltrexone is another drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it is an opiate blocker and is not an opiate. A person has the choice to take this drug as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from feeling high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 /month.
