Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Mapleville, RI.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Mapleville that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
