Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - North Smithfield, RI.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in North Smithfield that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
